***I wrote this after I read the first 4 books so my memory is not the best and some thoughts could be jumbled by accident, if they are I am sorry.***
This is my third time reading this book. The plan for this series is to finish it completely over the summer. Anyway here is the review in two ways: short version and longer version just focused on parts that I liked most.
A shorter but better description of this book is: Zoey gets marked, not just the normal crescent moon outline tattoo but a filled in (like a full vampyre) tattoo, she leaves her old life behind and starts her new life at the Tusla, Oklahoma House of Night, makes an enemy of the then most powerful fledging, finds a great group of friends, is invited to the Dark Daughters, gets an affinity for all five elements, drinks blood from both a human (her ex almost boyfriend and imprints with him, maybe) and a fledging (during the Dark Daughters and Sons Full Moon Ritual), gets owned by a cat (Nala), sees dead fledglings, and saves the day from a ritual gone wrong all in a span of one month from being first marked. Zoey goes from normal boring teenager to special fledging with problems in a month. I can relate to Zoey because she has had a bad family life and getss thrusts into something new and different. She gets new best friend after a major change. Zoey realizes something is wrong and works to fix it.
Zoey (Z) Redbird's life gets turned upside down when a vampyre tracker marks her as a vampyre fledging. Her best friend acts like Z is a monster and backs away. Zoey's almost boyfriend thinks that getting marked is "cool". Her family acts similar to the now ex best friend. Z's mom married a religious jerk and has basically ignored Zoey and her brother since. When Zoey gets home she tries to talk to her mother but her mother freaks out and calls the step father, John. John blows up in Zoey's face because he thinks getting marked was her fault and that she deserved it because of her terrible actions. Her parents then call the family shrink because they think they can help fix Zoey. They also call other people in the step father's religion to start a "prayer tree". If they were really parents who cared for their kids wouldn't just think "their behavior brought this on and they need prayers to pray the mark away". I personally hate John and totally love that Zoey calls him the step loser. Zoey slips out of the house and goes to visit her grandma because he will understand and want to help, unlike her parents. While trying to find her grandma in her lavender fields, Zoey slips and falls. After the fall the goddess Nyx appears infront of Zoey and talks to her. From this conversation you can tell that Nyx chose Zoey for a reason and I think that is cool.
Later that day Zoey wakes up in an unusual place with her grandma. Grandma Redbird drove Zoey to the House of Night. Thus starting massive changes.
Zoey accidently catches two other fledgings doing some gross stuff and makes an enemy of the leader of the Dark Daughters, which is a group of the super popular fledglings. This character is just mean. Zoey's roommate, Stevie Rae is the nicest person. Stevie Rae brigs Zoey to her group of friends and they let her in. This group of friends consists of Stevie Rae Johnson, Erin Bates, Shaunee Cole, and Damien Maslin. Zoey and her new friends save the Dark Daughters and Sons when Aphrodite, the leader starts a ritual meant to bring in spirits of good vampyres. What came was not nice and tried to kill Zoe's ex almost boyfriend who is obsessed with Zoey. Zoey uses her goddess given gifts of the elements, air, fire, water, earth, and spirit and her friends to send to bad ghost away. It was incredibly brave of her to do that.
Neferet, the High Priestess of that House of Night sees part of the ritual and strips Aphrodite of her title and gives it to Zoey.
