I personally do not like the ending of this book. I understand the decisions that were made to end it in this way but I just don't like it. The main character, Catherine is an optimistic young teenager with a dream of opening her own bakery with her best friend/maid, Mary Ann. Mary Ann however is a character who could never make up her mind and betrayed her best friend. She played a huge role in the ending. Catherine had accepted the Kings offer of courtship with no intention of saying yes in the end. Then in the end she says yes. Like what the heck? Catherine finally had a path that would lead her to a life with her bakery and the man of her dreams, Jest. But no, at the last second Catherine goes back to her old life to save Mary Ann, in doing so she caused the death of her Jest. A crazy pumpkin farmer killed Jest because Catherine killed his wife, who at the time was turned into an evil creature. Catherine then makes a deal with three old girls. The deal was to bring the man responsible for Jest's death, then Catherine would give her heart, yes her actual heart as payment. How can any living creature live without a heart? They can't. Catherine becomes a heartless turd. This book literally ends with Catherine saying "off with his head". What kind of ending is that? Why couldn't she have just went with the plan of going to chess and becoming a white queen? This is why the ending bothers me so much. The main character does exactly what she said she'd never do.
This book was actually quite good. Besides the ending, it had a very thought out plot. Catherine always thought about her dreams while still trying to appease her parents. She knew what the problems were when they arose and she blatantly pointed them out. All in all I'd give this book a 7/10.
